Time To Let Go
I bought my first car almost exactly 2 years ago, after an aggravating incident with the public transport.
And after many a cherished moments behind it's awesome wheel, I have decided to pass it on to the next lucky owner
But before I do, here goes a little story about my time on the road with the 2014 Audi A4 Allroad, premium trim. I call it A4gorithm.
I'll be honest, I am bit of a speed junky myself and I like living on the edge sometimes, but I am lucky that during those adrenalin-pumping moments, this car has had my back.
It's grip on the road is just incredible, even when pushing it hard around corners. This has saved me from a few close calls.
One was when I was driving back from the airport on a dark rainy night.
I wasn't even speeding that much - I was at about 70 km/h, aware of the situation. But the sheer volume of water on the road was treacherous, the downpour had been immense.
Suddenly, I felt the car begin to lose its footing. The steering wheel started to feel light in my hands as the tires struggled to find purchase on the ground.
My heart stopped for a moment, the car began to swerve, threatening to spin out of control.
As I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, firmly applying the brakes, the car's advanced traction control kicked in, working in harmony with my inputs.
The car's weight shifted forward smoothly, and I felt the tyres begin to regain their grip on the road again.
And in a matter of seconds that felt like an eternity, I had brought the car back under control. The Audi responded with remarkable poise, honestly, and it remained steady and composed throughout.
The second time, it was eerily similar, yet different.
This time it was on a bright, sunny summer day, and the incident was entirely my fault - I miscalculated the time it would take me to overtake, not realizing a van was approaching at high speed from the opposite direction, and I was with a heavy load.
It was Christmas time, and I was taking my family upcountry for the holidays. The Audi was packed to the brim with loved ones and gifts, making it heavier than usual.
I decided to pass a slow-moving truck ahead of us. And as I pulled to overtake, I noticed a van barreling towards us in the oncoming lane.
It appeared quite distant, so I was confident we would make the cut. But unbeknownst to me, was it's high approaching speed.
Halfway through the mission, I realized my grave miscalculation. And I needed to act quickly. My heart raced as I weighed my options - brake hard and fall behind the truck, or accelerate to complete the pass. In that split of a second, I chose to accelerate.
As I pressed the pedal to the floor, I felt a moment's hesitation from the Audi, likely due to it's holiday payload.
The car seemed to lag for a heart-stopping second. But then, as if sensing the urgency, the engine roared to life and we shot ahead.
The van was closing in fast, its horn blaring.
With no time to spare, I yanked the steering wheel hard, forcing the Audi back into our lane in the nick of time.
The sudden manoeuvre caused the car to swerve, and for a moment, I feared we'd lose control, again. But lucky enough, the Audi's stability system kicked in, correcting the swerve and bringing us back to steadfastness, even as I felt the weight shift dramatically forward.
The oncoming van whizzed by, we were mere inches from disaster(literally, it was that close), and I have not attempted a risky pass since.
It was in that moment that I truly appreciated the engineering marvel I was driving - a machine designed not just for speed, but for keeping you safe when you need it the most.
I could tell you about the car's first day, fresh from the dealership, when I couldn't resist testing its limits on the open road. The way I was effortlessly overtaking up to seven slower 18 wheeler trucks on a long, straight stretch of dual carriageway was nothing short of exhilarating. Its raw power and smooth acceleration were intoxicating.
This car has it all — breathtaking performance, safety features that have saved my bacon more than once, and the kind of reliability that makes every drive a pleasure.
This is getting longer than I anticipated, but I can't wrap this up without mentioning the infotainment system - my oh my. As a die-hard music lover, I have to say, this car's setup is something else.
The Audi MMI sound system is like a concert hall. Its bass is rich and deep. I find myself lost in the music, often discovering new notes in songs I thought I knew by heart.
One of the favourite songs I love jamming to in this car is Brandon Lake's "Just Like Heaven". Mannn, it's literally just like heaven, chef's kiss :)
In a way, this infotainment system became the soundtrack to some of my favorite memories in this car. It's these little things that turn every drive into an experience, making it hard to imagine parting ways with this four-wheeled friend. But it has come to that.
But why would I even sell it? You might ask.
Well, as you might know, I live in the UK, and the car is in Kenya, and I don't travel that often.
Actually, I only bought the car to avoid the frustrations I had with public transport. It had gotten to the point where I was putting my life in danger due to the constant long distances I was traveling. I wrote more about what exactly happened in my free newsletter here, if you subscribe you'll get it!
So in the first year, I only got to drive it for approximately 4 months, before I went back and sent the car upcountry for storage. Then last year I used it for the 3 months I was at home before I sent it back for storage again.
So yeah, I have owned it for two years, but only driven it for about 7 months. It's been in storage more than I have driven it! And that's exactly why I am selling - I want to put all the proceeds in stocks :), no seriously, I want to put it all in stocks so I don't just keep an asset sleeping at home.
It's still in it's pristine condition, and no major parts have been replaced, safe for a starter motor that was imported new from Germany.
So if you are in the market for a car that does more than move from point A to B, this could be your next powerhouse!
Contact me on Twitter here if you'd like to buy it, I am putting it up for Ksh 2.8M ($21,700) only!
